82-year-old woman found dead in home weeks after neighbors first called police out of concern

VELDA CITY (KMOV.com) - Police discovered an elderly Velda City woman dead in her home on Monday, but neighbors said they asked authorities to check on the woman weeks beforehand.

Residents on Lexington Avenue said they knew something was wrong when they didn't see their 82-year-old neighbor on her daily walk outside.

"For three weeks we haven't seen her, and they've been calling police everyday," said resident Rufus Branner.

Velda City Police Chief Daniel Paulino said his officers responded to the calls and spoke with the woman twice before she died, but she had the flu and did not want to be bothered.

Neighbors called police again after noticing an odor coming from the woman's home.

"When we got there, we didn't smell an odor," said Paulino. "It wasn't until we opened up the mail slot that it was obvious that there was something bad inside."

Despite neighbors concerns, police said there was nothing they could do without a family member's permission, prior to the reported odor.

According to authorities, no foul play was involved.
