Toilet-to-tap water process gains support during California drought

Orange County, Calif. -

A process that purifies sewage water into drinking water in California is gaining support amid the state's historic drought.

One water treatment plant following this practice in Orange County, California is the largest of its kind in the world. It is expanding production from 70 million to 100 million gallons per day.

"We can produce the water for less than the cost of imported water, and probably about half the cost of what it would take to desalinate seawater," said Mike Markus, the general manager of Orange County's water district.

Purified water is pumped into underground reservoirs before making it to household taps.

Officials said they hope this facility will serve as a model for other drought-stricken communities.
