Wellston Mayor Nathaniel Griffin told News 4 the decision to disband the department was made to save the city money. Griffin believes the city will save $300,000 per year.

Wellston said it is entering a police co-op with Vinita Park and Vinita Terrace. The 13 employees of the police department will be given an opportunity to apply for jobs with Vinita Park.
