ST. PETERS, Mo. (KMOV.com) - An alleged shoplifter was charged with three misdemeanors after reportedly attacking an off-duty police officer by punching and biting him, police said.

The suspect is 42-year-old Regina Washington, of O'Fallon, Mo., who was arrested on Thursday outside of the Dillards department store at Mid Rivers Mall in St. Peters.

The off-duty officer was working a secondary position as a security officer at Mid Rivers Mall when he reportedly saw Washington shoplifting.

The officer waited outside of the store to apprehend her, but she told him her child was alone in her car. The two went to the car, but it was reportedly empty.

When the officer attempted to arrest Washington, she allegedly bit him four times and punched him in the face.

After Washington was taken into custody, she reportedly admitted to shoplifting and was charged with misdemeanor theft, resisting arrest and assaulting a law enforcement officer.

According to officials, Washington had been on probation for another theft at the time of the incident.

Washington is being held on a $5,000 cash-only bond.
