Tips to staying safe during online transactions

BELLEVILLE, Ill. ( – The St. Clair County Sheriff's Department is hoping to take the danger out of online deals.

Major Richard Wagner advises never having anything identifiable in the background of pictures posted online. He also said never to share banking information online, buy or sell something alone and to make the exchange at a police department.

“If somebody doesn't want to meet you at 500 South Seventh Street, The St. Clair County Sheriff's Department, there's a reason why,” Major Wagner said. “That should throw up a red flag telling you something is not right here.”

Major Wagner also advises people to be on the lookout for counterfeit bills during transactions by using a counterfeit pen.

“If somebody gives you a stack of $100 and $20 bills, I wouldn't accept checks, cash only, and have that pen to check for counterfeit bills,” said Major Wagner.

The increase in attention to online transactions comes a little over a month after the death of Taylor Clark, who was allegedly murdered during a Craigslist transaction.
