Work on Poplar Street Bridge to close downtown ramp

Posted: Updated:

ST. LOUIS (AP / KMOV.com) - Missouri highway officials say a key ramp into downtown St. Louis from the Poplar Street Bridge that spans the Mississippi River soon will be closed for a month.

The Missouri Department of Transportation said the ramp from the westbound Poplar Street Bridge to southbound Interstate 55 and westbound Interstate 44 will be closed starting at 8 p.m. Thursday. MoDOT officials recommend Metro East commuters use the Stan Musial Veteran's Memorial Bridge as an alternate to the Poplar Street Bridge.

The department said crews will close the ramp from eastbound Interstate 44 to downtown St. Louis' Walnut Street for a week beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday. During that work, drivers will need to use the ramp from eastbound Interstate 44 to Washington Avenue to get to downtown.

All lanes and ramps, except for the ramp from eastbound Interstate 44 to Walnut, should reopen by 5 a.m. June 1.

When the lane shifting is complete, a new ramp from the westbound lanes of the bridge to eastbound Interstate 44 (previously referred to as Interstate 70) will open, and the ramp from the westbound bridge to westbound Interstate 44 will close for a month to start reconstruction.

Several ramps from westbound Interstate 64 into downtown will also be closed for a majority of the time that crews work on the Poplar Street Bridge.
