FERGUSON, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Residents packed Ferguson City Hall Tuesday to voice their opinion on whether Mayor James Knowles should step down.

The city council meeting was held amidst a push to oust Knowles from office. A group known as Ground Level Support started a petition to recall Knowles. 1800 signatures are needed to for a recall election to take place. The group says it has more than the required number of signatures.

Residents at the meeting were divided as to whether Knowles should step down.

Ground Level Support told News 4 it originally planned to turn in the petition at Tuesday's meeting, but will turn the petition into the city Wednesday instead.

The petition will then go to St. Louis County officials, who will verify the signatures. If enough signatures are verified, a recall election will be held.
