Group to present petition to remove Ferguson Mayor at Tuesday's city council meeting

FERGUSON, Mo. (KMOV.com) – On Tuesday a group hoping to remove Ferguson Mayor James Knowles from office will make their case before the Ferguson City Council.

Phil Gassoway started the website “Ground Level Support” in an effort to get Mayor Knowles out of office. The goal is to allow voters to decide through a recall election whether the mayor should be kept in office.

“The point of the recall is to hold the mayor accountable just like the city manager and the chief of police. They respectfully resigned and now we are trying to hold the mayor accountable after the department of justice findings,” said Gassoway.

Gassoway's petition needed 1800 signatures but he gathered roughly 2200 on the petition. If the signatures are verified, the petition will go to the county's Board of Elections to schedule a vote on recalling the mayor within 90 days. It would likely have voters going to the polls around early-August.

In the months after the Michael Brown shooting, Knowles has tried to bridge the division by recently announcing a permanent memorial to Brown. News 4 tried to reach Knowles for a comment on the recall, but a city spokesperson offered a text that said, “No comment.”

“We want someone in, no one in particular,” Gassoway said. “Just someone that would be accountable to the people that will do the right thing in the city of Ferguson.”

News 4 will continue following this story and will bring you the latest updates this week.
