Fire breaks out at empty church on Delmar

(KMOV) -- Firefighters were able to control a fire that broke out at an empty church in the 6100 block of Delmar Boulevard early Sunday morning.

St. Louis Fire officials were dispatched to Olivet Missionary Baptist just after 3 a.m. Firefighters say there was heavy smoke coming from the building when they arrived. The building was secured, so they made a forced entry in.

The fire began in the lower level of the building.

The building is no longer being used as a church, but is under renovation.

"I'm not sure what the intended purpose was, but...there's a fence of sorts on the exterior of the property," said Captain Garon Mosby of the St. Louis Fire Department. "All of that was secured. We got some word that there were some people working here earlier today."

Investigators are working on determining the cause of the fire.
