MANCHESTER, Mo. (KMOV.com) – A West County community is honoring a fallen soldier by naming a stretch of road after him this Memorial Day weekend.

Specialist Matthew Walker's funeral was held nearly a year ago, and on Saturday the City of Manchester will rename John Morgan Avenue to Matthew Walker Way in his honor.

Walker died after his unit was attacked by enemy fire as they patrolled the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan on June 5.

Walker's family told News 4 he wanted to be a solider since he was a kid and followed in his father's footsteps when he enlisted in the U.S. Army.

The public is invited to attend the ceremony, which will start at 1 p.m.
