ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Two young boys were inside a vehicle when a woman was fatally shot Thursday night.
Kendra Rankin, 24, of Ferguson, was seated in the driver's seat of a parked vehicle in the 4100 block of Enright when she was shot in the head and hip area.
A 28-year-old man was in the passenger's seat when the shooting occurred. The man told police he was sleeping when he heard the shots and awoke to find Rankin unconscious with gunshot wounds.
According to police, the 28-year-old's children, a 4-year-old boy and 1-year-old boy, were inside the vehicle at the time of the shooting.
The investigation is ongoing.
James Clark of Better Family Life said children and the elderly are becoming the target of violent criminals. Clark also said too many neighborhoods have been abandoned by the rest of the area.
"We have abandoned our more challenged neighborhoods. Families live without resources, things like drug treatment, anger management, employment, literacy, just a whole plethora of resources," Clark said.
Clark has started an initiative with pastors to try to help underserved neighborhoods.
