Charity operators charged with taking donations for personal use

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) - News 4's Chris Nagus confronted the people behind the Breast Cancer Society out of Mesa, Arizona back in 2012 over donation fund allocation.

In 2011, Barb Aldrich's sister died of breast cancer.

Soon after, Aldrich received a call from a telemarketer soliciting funds for the Breast Cancer Society and asked the telemarketer how much of the donations went to the fundraiser and how much the telemarketing company kept.

“They said they keep 80 percent, and 20 percent goes to the cancer fund,” said Aldrich.

Donation money kept by the company went to buy cars, jet skis, luxury vacations and even memberships to dating websites.

On Tuesday, the Federal Trade Commission banned the operators of the Breast Cancer Society and three other charities from fundraising in the future.
