GODFREY, Ill. (KMOV.com) - Deputies from the Madison County Sheriff's Office responded to a home in Godfrey, Illinois on Monday evening after a teenager reportedly found her pet cat deceased in the freezer.

When the deputy asked the child what happened, her 71-year-old grandmother, Josephine E. Bell, told the officer she killed the cat and the cat's four kittens with a hammer.

Bell previously told her grandchildren that if they didn't clean their rooms, they would lose their pets, police said. She reportedly said she did not feel like the responsibility of taking care of the cats should be hers.

Godfrey Animal Control arrived to take custody of the cat, but could not locate the kittens, which were said to have been thrown away.

Bell was charged with felony aggravated animal cruelty and is being held in Madison County Jail on a bond of $15,000.
