(KMOV.com) – The search is on for a suspect who hit a 74-year-old St. Peters woman.

A witness to the accident says the woman was planting flowers when she was struck by the vehicle around 10:30 a.m. Friday morning. That woman, Betty Holtmeyer, and her husband were planting flowers on property they own on Harvester Road near Harvester Court. The driver sped away from the scene.

“She was on the ground and I could just see a ton of blood coming out of her leg,” said witness Linda Weber, who leases the property from the Holtmeyers. “I mean a ton!”

"She was conscious and breathing the whole time, which surprised me due to the amount of blood she was losing. Iid figure she lose consciousness or go back into shock," Weber said. "The curb is busted up at the street where it wasn't busted before so we know something had to happen. He came up on the curb."

Holtmeyer was transported to St. Joseph's Medical Center in St. Charles, and on Tuesday, one leg had to be amputated. No description of the vehicle has been provided and police said there are no nearby security cameras that can help them in the investigation. Anyone with information should contact St. Peters police.

“Oh she's just a sweetheart. She's in her 70s,” Weber said. “Both of them. They're very sweet.”
