Suspect assaults man during strong-arm robbery in Central West End

ST. LOUIS, Mo. ( -

An attempted strong-arm robbery occurred in the Central West End  three years after a SLU graduate was murdered at the same location.

Robert Lesage, owner of Pizzeria Mia, said he was waiting tables when a disturbance outside startled restaurant patrons.

“[Customers] ran out and they actually witnessed a guy – he looked like he got hit and knocked to the ground,” he said.

The man told police the suspect tried to yank the chain around his neck near the intersection of Maryland and Taylor.

A similar incident occurred when Megan Boken, 23, was killed on the same block at the corner of Maryland and Taylor during a robbery in 2012. Her murder was considered an isolated incident, so neighbors were reportedly caught off guard by the latest robbery attempt.

Boken's killer is now serving a 20-year jail sentence, but police are still searching for the suspect in this incident.

Lesage said he hopes security cameras will help authorities find the man.

“Anything can happen anywhere,” he said. “It's not the community that you live in. It's the people that come into the community.”

No further details have been released at this time.
