Mayor to stand by Alton Police Chief if aldermen attempt to remove him

ALTON, Ill. (KMOV.com) – The City of Alton is locked in a political struggle over control of the city's police department.

Some of the city's Aldermen may try to vote out Alton Police Chief Jason Simmons later this week.

Alton's mayor, Brant Walker, says he is standing by the chief and will block any attempts to remove him.

“A lot of this is political theatrics, unfortunately as we get into this a little farther no bargaining unit or disgruntled employee is going to set managerial policy for this city” Walker said. “Myself along with my department heads will continue to set managerial policy and that's the way it's going to be as long as I'm mayor.”

Walker told News 4 in the last two years under Chief Simmons, crime in Alton has gone down.
