Radioactivity testing to begin at 2 Bridgeton landfills Monday

Posted: Updated:

BRIDGETON, Mo. (AP) - Radioactive tests are set to begin at the West Lake and Bridgeton landfills.

The Environmental Protection Agency announced Thursday that it approved a testing plan to understand the scope of radioactive contamination at the landfills in Bridgeton. Testing will begin Monday.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports West Lake Landfill was contaminated 40 years ago after a contractor for a uranium processing company illegally dumped waste there. The test will also look for contamination in part of the adjacent Bridgeton Landfill.

The EPA says the test will help it decide whether to construct a barrier between the two landfills and whether to cover the waste or dig it up for disposal elsewhere.
