MoDOT plans to upgrade interchange in O'Fallon

O'FALLON, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

The Missouri Department of Transportation is moving forward with plans to upgrade the interchange at Interstate 70 and Highway K in O'Fallon, Missouri.

The intersection has been a traffic trouble spot for many drivers. Karl Ferry, a local business owner, said traffic has increased tenfold over the past 30 years.

“They need to do something,” Ferry said. “There's many accidents through that underpass there. I take it every morning to get [to work], and I missed getting hit a couple times.”

According to MoDOT, part of the problem is the outer road which is too close to the interstate. The $16 million plan calls to convert these roads from two-way traffic to one-way.

MoDOT said it is battling budget problems, but money for the interchange upgrade was committed years ago.

The city of O'Fallon and the County will also contribute funds to the project.
