TROY, Ill. (KMOV.com) - Friends and coworkers of Taylor Clark, who was found dead of an apparent homicide late Tuesday, gathered to honor him at the ZX Gas station in Troy, Illinois where Clark worked.

"It is a nightmare which you never wake up from," said Adam Brendel, who knew Clark since the two were in pre-school. "We just have to stay strong for each other."

Candles and a memorial were set up in the space where Clark always parked the red Nissan car Clark planned to sell on Craigslist. Clark's manager at the station told News 4 through tears that workers at the gas station are so close they refer to each other as family.

"I just could not sleep at all, and when I woke up this morning, I was just bawling, hoping it was a dream. Then it really hit me," said Ashley Pickens, a friend of Clark.

A sign on the front drive of the station read "Forever in our hearts, Taylor." Along with friends and coworkers, ZX Gas customers were among those remembering Clark.

"This is just awful, he was so young and just starting his life," said Donna Rutz, a ZX Gas customer. "I feel so sorry for his family and his parents."

Managers told News 4 Clark's mother once was the manager at the same ZX Gas station. Customers described Clark as friendly, level-headed, responsible and personable.

"I will really miss seeing him everyday," said Rutz.

Coworkers at the ZX Gas station said they will hold another candlelight vigil in Clark's memory Wednesday beginning at 10 p.m.
