Jury convicts man in cold-case murder from 1991

Posted: Updated:

CHICAGO (AP) -- A Wisconsin man charged with murder after his DNA matched evidence in a long-unsolved killing has been convicted in the 1991 slaying of a 16-year-old Chicago girl.

According to a news release from the Illinois State Attorney's office, Steven Dixon claimed he was asleep in 16-year-old Tiffany Lindsay's apartment on Oct. 13, 1991, when he was awoken by sounds of an attack.

He said he fled after seeing her body on the ground. Authorities discovered Lindsay's body and the murder weapons in the apartment. But prosecutors did not charge Dixon until 2011, when advances in DNA testing confirmed it was Dixon's blood under Lindsey's fingernails and on the murder weapons.

A Cook County jury convicted 40-year-old Dixon late last week. Dixon faces up to 60 years in prison for his crime.
