St. Charles County firefighter dies en route to fire

ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo (KMOV.com) – A St. Charles County firefighter died while responding to a fire early Sunday morning.

Larry Lawhorn, 60, worked with the Orchard Farm Fire Protection District (OFFPD). Authorities say around 2:00 a.m., Lawhorn was traveling northbound on Highway J responding to a structure fire in the 1600 block of Second Street in Portage Des Sioux.

The OFFPD vehicle Lawhorn was driving left the road and was found in a field. Lawhorn was found by emergency responders who attempted to resuscitate him. He was later pronounced dead at the scene. It is unclear how he ended up in a field.

“Line-of-duty deaths are difficult for any agency, but this hits particularly hard in a small, close-knit organization like ours,” said Orchard Farm Fire Protection District Chief Jeremey Hollrah. “Larry was a hardworking, dedicated member of the Fire District, and his loss will be mourned not only by his colleagues, but the community at large.”

Lawhorn also served with the St. Charles Fire Protection District before volunteering in the OFFPD.
