(RNN) - Singer Ben E. King, best known for his hit song Stand By Me, died at the age of 76 years old, his agent reported Friday.

King began his music career with the group The Drifters in the 1950s. He co-wrote and sang their hit There Goes My Baby before breaking out on his own and scoring his first hit with Spanish Harlem.

His signature hit again found its way into the Billboard Top 100 in the 1980s, when the film Stand By Me was released. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Drifters in 1988.

King was born Benjamin Earl Nelson on Sept. 28, 1938, in Henderson, NC.
