FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. ( – Police say a suspect fatally shot a family member in Fairview Heights late Tuesday night.

A 52-year-old man, later identified by police as Roland Lewis, Sr. was shot in the 100 block of Sheffield Court at 10:40 p.m. Neighbors say it was shocking to see police cars in their neighborhood and police say it's been years since they've had a homicide investigation.

“I've never heard of it happening in Fairview, we've always had a peaceful neighborhood, always,” said Andrea May, who lives across the street from the victim.

Neighbors and investigators want to know what happened inside the house on Sheffield Court.

“It's a little bit of a puzzle but right now we believe there was an argument between the male subject and the male suspect, and they both are family members,” said Lt. Mike Hoguet with Fairview Heights Police.

Police took a 21-year-old man into custody shortly after the shooting. The victim died at the hospital from a single gunshot wound, but News 4 learned one of Fairview Height's newest police officers went to great lengths to save him.

“He assisted the ambulance crew, providing CPR all the way to the hospital,” said Lt. Hoguet.

Patrolman Shane Leiby has been on the street less than a month and Lt. Hoguet says he was proud of the way the new officer handled the situation.

“This isn't training anymore, this is real life,” he said.

Neighbors say knowing this was a domestic situation takes away some of feelings of uneasiness, but not the sadness.

“It's devastating to know what the survivors must be going through,” said May.

Police expected charges to be filed soon and will release the identity of the suspect when that happens. The suspect currently remains in police custody.
