ST. LOUIS, Mo. ( -

Two tourists told News 4 they had their hotel keys stolen, allowing thieves to enter their room and steal various items.

Heather Karvelat said she and her friend were out at Laclede's Landing and Lumiere Place Saturday night when her friend was pickpocketed. Her friend's hotel key, which was stolen, was still in the key slip which listed their room number.

“There's nothing other we could have done other than take it out of the slip,” Karvelat said. “Look at the slips that your hotel room keys come in. That has the room number on it, so take the key out of the slip. Do not carry that slip around with you.”

Karvelat said the thieves then entered their room at the Hyatt in downtown St. Louis in the middle of the night while she and her friend were asleep inside the room.

“They came into our room while we were sleeping and went through our things and stole everything. They stole our laptops, our phone,” Karvelat said. “I don't know if they knew we were going to be in there or not. I don't know.”

Police said the culprits later used her credit card to make purchases at a Metro station. Karvelat said the hotel showed her surveillance footage of the suspects entering and leaving the elevator. Police are looking for the suspects.
