Metro still investigating death of woman killed by train

SWANSEA, Ill. (KMOV.com) -- Angel Wintrode is the founder of the Bi-State Wildlife Hotline, Inc. She and her 70 volunteers rescue stray animals in both Missouri and Illinois.

Friday, one of her dedicated volunteers, 58-year-old Sandie Konopelski, was struck and killed by a metro train in Swansea. “I know Sandie had gone out a number of times for Metrolink calls,” said Wintrode.

Metro said the accident is under investigation and would not confirm if they called the rescue agency. “I don't think they foresaw this. I don't think anyone could. It's something that Sandie would have done no matter what,” said Wintrode.

Konopelski rescued at least 500 animals last year. Despite the major loss, bi-state wildlife hotline said they will carefully continue their mission.
