EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (KMOV.com) --  The Illinois State Police is looking into whether or not a security guard at an apartment complex was justified in shooting an East St. Louis man Saturday.

The incident happened around 1:15 p.m. Saturday at the John Deshields Apartment complex in the 1100 block of McCasland Avenue.

Several housing authority officers were at the complex following up on prior burglary reports. Officers in front of the complex came in contact with a man and a confrontation ensued. During the confrontation, a security officer discharged a weapon, striking the man in the lower back area.

News 4 has learned security officers at the housing authority have been "deputized" by the sheriff's department. Officers are given authority to carry guns and make arrests. Officers are only given the authority while on duty as security for the housing authority.
