SWANSEA, Ill. (KMOV.com) – A wildlife worker called in to rescue an animal off the tracks was hit and killed by a MetroLink train in the Metro East Friday morning.

Sandie Konopelski was struck on the tracks near North Illinois Street around 8:20 a.m., according to the Bi-State Wildlife Hotline, the agency Konopelski worked for.

Konopelski has been described as a dedicated animal rescue volunteer. 

Trains were not operating between the Memorial Hospital MetroLink Station and the Belleville MetroLink Stations for several hours while crews cleared the scene.
