MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -  Convicted felon Joshua Dugger, 32, was arrested on gun charges after a passer-by called police about him looking into parked cars in a motel parking lot.

Police arrived to see Dugger peering into vehicles in the lot and discovered he had screwdrivers, pliers, an ice pick, a hammer, two flashlights and a loaded .40 caliber handgun on him.

Dugger drove three and a half hours from Kansas City and told police he was just visiting a friend.

"If a criminal is going to be a criminal, they're going to do so wherever they see that opportunity present itself," said Officer Mark Fedak of Maryland Heights Police Department.

Considering Dugger's past convictions of drug possession and vehicle theft and his loaded handgun, police are glad they caught him before he had an opportunity to commit additional crimes, thanks to the call from a concerned citizen.

"I cannot express how important it is, that we get that kind of help from the community, when they see something that just doesn't seem right," said Officer Fedak.

Dugger is now in custody, facing felony charges for unlawful possession of a firearm.
