NORTH ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -

ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- An attempted robbery suspect was shot while allegedly trying to rob a north St. Louis gas station late Tuesday night.

The suspect was shot in the leg when he tried to rob a Gas Mart, located in the 6000 block of West Florissant, around 11:30 p.m., police said.

Police say one of the two male suspects displayed a firearm and announced a robbery. The victim removed cash from the drawer and the suspects took the drawer and attempted to flee out of the store. As the two men were leaving, the victim retrieved a firearm and began shooting. The victim continued until outside the store, where he and the suspect exchanged fire. The man fled towards Park Lane and the other suspect went towards West Florissant until out of sight.

Police found the suspect who had exchanged gunfire suffering from gunshot wounds to his abdomen and legs. He was taken to the hospital and is listed in critical, but stable condition.

The victim was uninjured and the investigation is ongoing.
