What can be done to prevent shootings on interstates?

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

In the past nine months, there have been at least nine shootings on St. Louis area highways, prompting questions of what can be done to end the violence.

"When you have a rolling shooting situation, anybody is at risk," said Sergeant Al Nothum. Sgt. Nothum said no one is safe when someone displays that kind of disregard for human life.

Some of the shooters in these cases have been caught, but others are still at large.

News 4 asked MoDOT if their 450 traffic cameras could provide the evidence law enforcement need to catch the shooters.

District Traffic Engineer Jeanne Olubogun said MoDOT cameras are not geared for police work.

"We could never have the level of detail police want," said Olubogun, who added that MoDOT does not record any video because the amount of server space needed to do so would be unfeasible.

Nothum said there are plenty of troopers on the highway. He also said anyone who witnesses a shooting a highway can call 911 or *55. *55 will connect someone directly with state trooper dispatchers.
