Officers leave county police force in record numbers, despite pay increases

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) - In a time where crime numbers in the area are high, there is concern over officers leaving the St. Louis County Police Department in record numbers.

Authorities said officers are leaving the force in record high numbers, even though pay for officers has increased as much as ten percent in many cases.

The continued backlash from the Ferguson unrest following the death of Michael Brown is still impacting the department.

Department officials said maintaining competitive pay with other agencies is the overwhelming problem.

"The good thing about our department is, it's huge and there is a lot of opportunity for movement, whether that is through promotions or through guys who want other jobs," said Sergeant Brian Schellman of the St. Louis County Police Department.

Leaders in the department said the size of the department is a benefit for younger officers hoping to advance.
