 ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- Officers with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department were called to Interstate 44 on a report of two cars exchanging gunfire with each other Monday afternoon.

Police said the occupants of the two cars - a dark-colored Chevy Impala and a white Pontiac Grand Am - exchanged gunfire near the I-44/I-55 split. One of the suspects, Bruce Johnson, 22, admitted to firing a semi-automatic pistol. He was on probation at the time of the shooting. Johnson has been charged with one count of unlawful possession of a firearm. The identity of the second suspect has not been released.

One witness told News 4 a bullet hit the back window of his truck, and grazed his son's arm. His son survived.

Police say Johnson and the other suspect fled on foot after they reportedly got into an accident near the Jefferson exit of Interstate 44. Police were able to take the two into custody. Officers said they recovered a gun and marijuana.

Westbound I-44 was closed for a brief period but later re-opened.
