LINCOLN COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) – A 33-year-old Elsberry man is facing charges after allegedly burning a 6-year-old with a nightlight.

On April 7, according to the 6-year-old, her mother's boyfriend, Michael Gilbert, caught her holding a piece of paper over a nightlight in an attempt to light it. Gilbert then unplugged the nightlight and touched it to the girl's right leg, police said.

According to police, Gilbert claimed he was using it as a teaching moment to show the girl that things get hot and did not realize the bulb would burn the girl.

The girl suffered second-degree burns.

Gilbert is charged with felony abuse or neglect of a child. He posted a bond of $7,500 on Friday and was ordered not to have contact with the victim.
