St. Louis Police Chief warns against leaving weapons in unattended vehicles

Posted: Updated:

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – St. Louis Police are warning visitors to downtown St. Louis not to keep a gun in their car when they head to a Cardinals or Blues game.

During baseball season last year, there were several reports of car break-ins and police said that thieves will steal any weapons left in unattended vehicles.

“We've already seen for the first quarter a 70 percent increase in guns stolen out of cars,” said St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson. “The greatest asset we have is people in the community who want to keep the community safe.”

St. Louis Police do not release stolen gun statistics on their monthly crime report but from January through March the number of aggravated assaults with a gun was up nearly 60 percent.
