EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) – An Edwardsville Police Officer and a suspect were transported to a hospital after an officer-involved shooting near downtown Edwardsville Wednesday morning.

"[I was] shocked, completely shocked because this is something you don't hear," said Charles Ellis, an Edwardsville resident.

An Edwardsville Police Officer and Madison County Deputy, both with the Cyber Crimes Division, were serving a search warrant to seize a computer in the 300 block of Fillmore when the incident occurred around 7:30 a.m.

"Officers identified themselves, announced a search warrant, at which time the subject displayed a handgun," said Captain Jim Morrisey of the Illinois State Police. "There was a struggle over the firearm and during that struggle a deputy from the Madison County Sheriff's Office discharged his firearm."

During the struggle, the Madison County investigator fired at least two shots. One of the shots struck the officer in the hand and the other hit the suspect in the jaw.

The officer and suspect were able to walk to the ambulance after the shooting.

The suspect was airlifted from an Illinois hospital in serious condition after the shooting. The officer was listed in good condition at a Metro East hospital.

"Officers have one option when a handgun is displayed," said Capt. Morrisey. "So, bad things happen when someone displays a handgun toward police."

Illinois State Police said they are working to obtain a search warrant to search the home.

Residents of the neighborhood said they rarely see any crime. Resident Caroline Klette said, "It's not normal here at all."

Edwardsville Police would not comment on the investigation that brought them to the neighborhood, but the cyber crimes task force spends much of its time investigating child pornography cases.

The Madison County Deputy and Edwardsville Police Officer have 15 years of experience, police said.
