ALTON, Ill. ( -

Police said an officer-involved shooting in Alton on Monday afternoon was related to Sunday's shooting in Affton and SWAT situation in Worden, Illinois.

According to authorities, an officer shot and killed 27-year-old Isaac Jimenez in the 3400 block of Lincoln in Alton after he allegedly pointed a small caliber handgun at police officers on Monday evening.

Residents of a home on Lincoln Street called police at around 5:20 p.m. after spotting Jimenez on their property. Four Alton police officers responded and encountered the suspect on the back porch.

"They encountered a white male subject who displayed a weapon at the officers," said Master Sergeant Mark Doiron. "The officers gave several verbal commands to drop the weapon. He did not and the Alton officer discharged his service weapon, striking the individual who later died on the scene."

Five different law enforcement agencies were searching for Jimenez, who was considered a person of interest in a Sunday morning shooting of a 27-year-old woman in Affton.

The woman, believed to be Jimenez's ex-girlfriend, suffered a single gunshot wound to the head and is still recovering in the hospital. Police are still working to determine what led to the shooting.

On Sunday evening, a SWAT team searched for Jimenez near his home in Worden, Illinois, but he eluded police.

After Monday evening's shooting, the Illinois State Police officially took over the investigation.

The Alton officer who shot Jimenez is a male with 10 years on the police force. The officer is on paid leave pending an investigation.

Authorities have not said how many shots were fired at Jimenez.

The investigation is ongoing.
