(KMOV.com) – Police have arrested an 18-year-old man after he allegedly broke into a home in north St. Louis County.

Carlos Cotton, 18, is facing assault charges as well as burglary and armed criminal action charges after police say he broke into the home of Don and Hazel Kuhlman. They say Cotton forced them into their basement.

“He was looking for money. He said, ‘If you don't give me money, I'm going to kill you. I'm going to kill you.'” As Cotton was rummaging through the home, Hazel tried to escape by running upstairs and locking the door, but Cotton broke through the door.

“When he came up the stairs, my husband stabbed him,” Hazel said. Don Kuhlman says he thinks he stabbed Cotton in the leg. That's when Cotton fled their home. After Cotton fled, police say they saw a man matching his description boarding the #47 bus. Police asked all occupants on the bus to keep their hands up while they searched for the suspect. Cotton was not on the bus.

He was later arrested at a different location. He is being held on a $200,000 cash-only bond.
