More jobs coming to refinery in Wood River

Posted: Updated:
WOOD RIVER (KMOV.com) - Phillips 66 announced it will be investing $200 million in its Wood River refinery, a project that will create hundreds of jobs.

Two projects are slated to begin at the refinery, one of which involves removing more sulphur from gasoline. In total, the projects will take two years. Many jobs will be created for electricians, pipe fitters, and carpenters.

The refinery currently employs about 850 Phillips 66 workers and 400 contract workers. The new project will not create a lot of permanent jobs but someone with Phillips 66 said it hires 50 workers or more through attrition.

The announcement came a few weeks after US Steel announced its Granite City plant would close, causing around 2,000 workers to be laid off.
