Property tax raise on the ballot in Granite City

Posted: Updated:

GRANITE CITY, Ill. (KMOV.com) – Voters in Granite City will have to decide whether property taxes should increase to give the school more money.

The vote comes less than two weeks after it was announced that the steel plant in the town would “temporary close.”

The vote could have permanent ramifications for kids in the school district.

According to the superintendent, the property tax increase would generate near $4 million a year. If the district cannot get the money, the superintendent says some programs, like band and football, could be on the chopping block.

Several other districts throughout Illinois have asked voters for a property tax increase to make up for state funding cuts.
