Free service available to help low income taxpayers

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) - A federally funded program that helps low income taxpayers who may be facing tax problems is run locally though Washington University.

Law students at the school work at the Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC), which gives them a chance to develop skills needed in the legal world. They work as student attorneys under faculty supervision on tax related issues.

The clinic is part of the VITA Site (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Site) program, which is funded through the IRS. Washington University recently $80,000 for LITC.

The students who participate in LITC are warning people to trust just anyone to prepare their taxes. LITC works within the law to try to help people with massive tax debt who cannot afford to pay.

Many of the students told News 4 they find their work rewarding.
