Suspect robs salon customers at knifepoint in East Alton

EAST ALTON, Ill. ( -

Paula Provaznik has owned Salon One in East Alton for nearly ten years and never had any issues until a man armed with a knife walked into her business on Wednesday morning.

"We were scared to death," Provaznik said. "We had just started the business and a masked guy—he was completely covered—he walked in and held the place up. He said 'this is a robbery and I want your money.' And actually since yesterday was April Fools' Day, I thought it was a joke."

It was no joke, Provaznik realized, when she saw the suspect armed with a hunting knife.

"I said 'I have $30 in my drawer.' He went through [a customer's] purse, another customer had a $5 bill and he took that."

No one was injured and the suspect escaped through the back of the shopping center.

"The door will always be locked from now on," said Provaznik. "We'll just go to the door, let [customers] in and lock it behind them."

Police said they have some leads on the case but have not yet made an arrest.
