Tax Cheats: Waiting until last minute to file your taxes could put you at risk

Posted: Updated:

IRS officials have warned that waiting until right before the April 15 deadline to file taxes can put citizens at an even greater risk.

A special agent within the Department of Treasury said whether it is a cell phone, land-line or computer, dozens of scams are out there because it is now easier to obtain information.

"They know where you live, they know what your house looks like, they know your siblings, your spouse, your children," said IRS Spokesman Luis Garcia.

If someone calls you demanding immediate payment, Garcia warned, it should be seen as a red flag.

"The IRS is never going to call you and say 'you have to pay now, you have to pay today or you're going to be arrested,'" said Garcia.

Using pressure in phone calls, the IRS says, is a way criminals try to get money out of you more quickly.

"We're becoming much more accessible to criminals. They can get to us in many ways that they never used to be able to before," said Joanne McLean, IRS Special Agent. "The best thing to do is just to hang up and not return any of their calls."
