ST. FRANCOIS COUNTY (KMOV.com) – A police officer with the Leadwood Police Department is facing a felony child abuse charge after injuring a child in February, police said.

Jay R. Bellis, 38, of Farmington is facing one felony count of child abuse after he allegedly threw a 4-year-old boy against a wall on February 24.

According to police, Bellis admitted to losing his temper and throwing the child against a wall, causing the boy to hit his head on a kitchen cabinet. Bellis also admitted to causing the boy's ear to bleed when he scratched it while pulling it after the child misbehaved at daycare.

Bellis was rehired at the Leadwood Police Department on March 12 and was quickly promoted to sergeant.
