St. Louis Police launch 'Rapid Response Team' to increase city security on weekends

ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – The St. Louis Police Department launched the “Rapid Response Team” for the first time Sunday night in an effort to keep weekend crime down.

“We have to set the tone for the expectations of what happens in our city,” St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson. “The things we've seen in The Delmar Loop the past two weeks or on the MetroLink are not the expectations of what happens in our city.”

The new enforcement team consists of 24 officers, some in reflective vests in marked cars and others in plain clothing and unmarked cars. The idea of creating a team like this was born out of the recent rash of violent events involving teens and young adults on the weekends.

“We've seen this phenomenon of young people coming together where they want to fight each other,” Dotson said. “Parents, talk to your kids. That's not appropriate behavior. If we make arrests, we're also coming to the parents and giving the parents summons too.”

The squad will operate on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and will focus on the busiest areas of the city from now until the end of summer. Dotson also says officers are working with Metro to put more officers on the trains to prevent violence there as well.
