MACOUPIN COUNTY, Ill. (KMOV.com) - Officers say it started as a well-being check of an elderly person, but ended with an officer shooting a suspect.

According to Macoupin County Sheriff Shawn Kahl, two officers responded to a home located on Illinois Route 138, just west of Mount Olive, Thursday night.

Sheriff Kahl said that as the officers approached the home, 30-year-old Brett Foster exited the house with a weapon pointed at police. One of the officers then fired their gun, hitting Foster.

Authorities said Foster was flown by a helicopter to a hospital in Springfield, Illinois, his condition has not been released. The officer who shot the suspect was also transported to the hospital, but it is reported that no officers were injured during the incident.

Foster's weapon was recovered at the scene, police said.

Family members of Foster that were inside the home at the time of the shooting are being interviewed by authorities.

The Illinois State Police Collinsville District will be leading the investigation into the shooting.

Both officers who were called to the home will be placed on administrative leave during the investigation, according to authorities.

The officers involved are veterans and were recently hired by the Macoupin Sheriff's Department. Foster was charged with aggravated assault.
