ST. LOUIS (AP) - The St. Louis region grew in 2014, but not by much.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the region of 2.8 million residents gained about 5,000 people last year, mostly due to new births. Net migration was negative. The estimate was released Wednesday by the U.S. Census.

Of the nation's 50 largest metropolitan areas, St. Louis was 42nd in population growth.

St. Charles County gained about 5,600 residents last year, to 379,493 residents. St. Louis County's population remained essentially unchanged, and the city of St. Louis lost about 1,000 people, though that is a much slower rate of decline than many recent years. The city now has an estimated population of 317,419.
