U.S. Steel to "temporarily idle" Granite City plant, more than 2,000 employees affected

GRANITE CITY, Ill. (KMOV.com) – More than 2,000 U.S. Steel employees in Granite City will be affected when the North American Flat-Rolled operations are consolidated and the Granite City Works operations are “temporarily idle,” according to a press release posted on the company's website.

The press release states the company is idling operations in Granite City as “part of an on-going adjustment of steelmaking operations throughout North America to match customer demands.”

U.S. Steel said 2,080 employees at Granite City Works will be issued notices under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. Some workers believe the layoffs are being caused by foreign steel companies who are shipping in cheaper steel.

The company will continue to operate steelmaking operations in Alabama, Indiana, Michigan and Pennsylvania.
