ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A North St. Louis woman was surprised by a burglar in her kitchen Saturday night and she was even more shocked when he attacked her.

Evelyn Johnson was getting ready for bed when she went to check on a noise she heard in her kitchen and saw a man climbing through her window and into the kitchen sink.

When Johnson tried to grab a knife to defend herself, the man punched her in the face.

"Because he hit me so hard, I fell," said Johnson. "And I said, 'Oh, I'm going to get you now!' And then by that time he ran out the door and he was gone."

While it is not clear why Johnson's home was targeted, there have been other crimes in the neighborhood.

"They found a body down on the lot a couple months ago," said Lorraine King, Johnson's neighbor. "Unfortunately it was one of the young men who grew up in the neighborhood."

Johnson admits it's not a good feeling, but said, "I mean, I got to be here. And where can I go?"

For now, Johnson plans to add additional security to her home and is just glad to be alive.

St. Louis Police said the investigation is ongoing and is being classified as a burglary and assault.
