Gunfire hits South City neighborhood for second time in a month

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

The Carondelet neighborhood at South Broadway and Bates has been unusually loud over the past month, with two separate gunfire incidents.

"I just want the neighborhood to be peaceful, and people shouldn't have to fear about gunshots," said Tony Spranaitis, who lives in the neighborhood.

Multiple neighborhood residents told News 4 they heard several shots the other night, but St. Louis Police did not have any information on the incident.

"Until February we've never had a house that was a target of gunfire," said Spranaitis. "I've been here for 8 years at this location and grew up two blocks from here; this is a whole new world."

11th Ward Alderman Tom Villa said he is working with police to clean up the area, which he said has had problems with drug dealers and prostitution.

"I think more patrols would help and some relationship policing where police get to know the people on the block," said Alderman Villa.

No injuries were reported in either of the neighborhood's shootings.
