WARRENTON COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Investigators dug up the remains of a man Monday whose headless and handless body was found in the woods in Warren County in 1987.

More than 50 leads were tracked down by investigators, but nothing panned out and the case went cold.

Investigators are now hoping for a break.

About two dozen investigators, anthropologists and an emergency response team from the FBI spent several hours digging up the man's body in the Warrenton City Cemetery.

The remains will be sent to the University of North Texas, where investigators hope they'll be able to recover DNA samples.

Lt. Matt Schmutz of the Warrenton County Sheriff's Department says the first step is getting the DNA, which will allow them to put it into multiple databases and can be compared to t people who believe they may have a connection to the victim.

Investigators say they believe the man was between 35 and 45 years old and an autopsy showed that he had cocaine and alcohol in his system.

There is no timetable on when the DNA will be available.
